Why Are Dysport Units Measured Differently Than Botox Units?

Dysport and Botox are both botulinum toxin type A products used for similar purposes, such as reducing wrinkles or treating certain medical conditions. However, their units are not directly interchangeable because they are formulated and measured differently.

The commonly accepted conversion ratio is approximately: 1 unit of Botox ≈ 3 units of Dysport

Key Points:

1. This ratio may vary slightly depending on the practitioner and the specific treatment area.
2. The efficacy and spread of Dysport and Botox can differ, so the dosing strategy might be adjusted based on the individual patient’s needs.

Here at Rejuvenate Austin, we try to make things as easy and transparent for the patient as possible and that requires education. In this short blog post, I am going to explain why we convert Dysport units to Botox units to make your dosing and final bill easier to understand.

Let me start by introducing myself for my new blog readers. I am Dr. Jessica Wright and I am board certified in General Surgery. I have been practicing in Aesthetic Medicine and Anti-Aging for over a decade. I completed a Fellowship in Anti-Aging in 2021. I have treated thousands of patients personally and my practice has treated over 10,000 patients. Over the years, we have noticed how confusing it can be to switch between neurotoxins and to understand all the other procedures to achieve optimal skin health. I began writing blogs to help with the education of my patients and I even have printed copies in the office. I love sending patients home with handouts and a thorough consult sheet. We have a secure text line for questions after you get home and we pride ourselves in communication and education.

Now back to Dysport and Botox… The other competitor to Botox that we like is Xeomin. It is measured very much like Botox and does not require a conversion. I recently wrote a blog about Xeomin and when I like to use it for a patient. Go check it out!

Dysport, as you can see above, is measured so differently from Botox and can cause confusion around dosing and the final price of your service. Well, take a deep breath and rest assured that I made it super easy! A vial of Dysport is delivered at 300 units. A vial of Botox is 100 units. You can mix them exactly the same and inject them both as 100 Botox units. We will call Botox Units “BU” moving forward. Now remember that Dysport equation above: 1 unit of Botox ≈ 3 units of Dysport

So the 300 unit vial of Dysport is equivalent to the 100 unit vial of Botox. Now let’s just inject them both as a “BU”. Too many aesthetic practices are telling patients Dysport is $4/unit and Botox is $14/unit, but you need 3 times the Dysport. How confusing!! Instead of quoting you 60 units of Dysport, we will quote you 20 units of Dysport or Botox. They are both $14/BU. Make sense?

Now the math is super simple! When these items go on promo at $11/BU that is even better. Our membership is only $35/month and you lock in $10/unit of any Botox and 20% off skincare, filler, and skincare!

Botox is onabotulinumtoxinA

Dysport is abobotulinumtoxinA

Xeomin is incobotulinumtoxinA

So, what does that mean? My clients often ask me which product I recommend and why. It is a tad difficult to give a straight answer because they are more similar than different. Obviously, Botox is marketed the most and is owned by Aesthetic giant Allergan. Botox has been around the longest giving them the edge on brand recognition. The loyalty program offered by Allergan is good and keeps clients requesting Botox time and time again. Dyport is made by Galderma and Xeomin is made by Merz. But what is the real physiologic difference?

Botox Austin

The answer is “Not much is different between the three products”. We all notice subtle differences in the business. Dysport tends to spread a tad more, but not in every client. Dysport kicks in at 2-4 days, where Botox takes around 4-7. Xeomin generally kicks in around day 5 as well. I have clients that feel Dysport lasts longer, but not all clients agree on that matter. Xeomin had a little mixing issue in its early launch period that led to less product in the solution. This has since been corrected, but I still have clients say they heard Xeomin does not last as long. This has not been the case in our office. We feel Xeomin lasts as long as Botox and Dysport in the average client. The one thing that is consistent across the board is when a client lands on one product, they have very specific reasons why. Every single person will have a slightly different experience with the three products and will choose a specific product based on that experience. For example, I treat two sisters and one gets at least 3 extra weeks of results with Dysport than Botox. For her sister, the opposite is true. These ladies keep a journal and are very specific about their experiences. They are comparing comparable treatments using different products. This brings me to my next point…

Dosage
The dose of the drug is far more important for longevity than the drug you choose. I am not saying that one of the above drugs won’t give you better results. I think most people would have a favorite if they tried all three. I am just saying the most important factor for longevity is dose, assuming the placement of the drug was good. Lastly, I like to alternate my neurotoxins to avoid forming antibodies to any one drug. I feel like I get the best results doing this and often recommend it to my clients.

Now that I have confused you, I will try to clear the air. Please try all three neurotoxins to see which you prefer to browse this site. Keep a journal and try to keep doses the same for a specific region when comparing the three. Sign up for both Allergan’s and Galderma’s loyalty programs. I attached the links below. They are easy savings plans to help offset some of the cost. I offer complimentary consultations to answer questions about Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and all other treatments.
